Con people pay the cost of often a small car just to go to these events once all expenses are tallied. A NYC con is almost certainly an investment to get to go to. They need to cheer to avoid the uncomfortable thought that they might have wasted all that money, its pure sunken cost.
Its what made the "Is this an April Fool's Joke" guy at Blizzcon stand out so much, because of how rare it is for people to not just nod and say "I'm having so much fun" to everything at these.
