It's why the left made so much progress by being sexual degenerates and the right/religious made more progress promoting monogamy than abstinence. It's easier to sell people on a committed relationship than outright saying you should refuse all sex till marriage when the West made marriage into a spike pit trap for men.

Abstinence made a lot more sense with the cultural framework around marriage intact. Women wanted to be virgins to be suitable marriage partners. Since marriage is the most reliable way to raise good children, and all the stability it provides, women were emotionally and rationally attracted to marriage and therefore incentivized as much as anyone can be to abstinence. Traditionally less capital expended by men by extramarital sex, but that's not a given.
