Well, they do think Jesus went to hell to defeat death before rising from the dead, so the charitable interpretation is that is what they are depicting.
His face is covered... WHY? What a beautiful way to portray a supposed Savior, with some apparent Hell Debris still stuck to His face as he ascends to Heaven amongst what appears to be an explosion of evil spirits being released.
"Charitable" is the correct word for the assertion that this is the Vatican celebrating Jesus' Ascension.
Anybody who knows how mockery works knows this is it. My handle, for example, is a mockery of an unhinged mentally retarded man
I guess that would depend on what you believe about the resurrection. The catholics focus (a little too much in my opinion) on the suffering Christ went through. I can see how to a catholic the idea that Jesus suffered through the resurrection until he ascended to heaven as inspirational.

Not his ascension, his descent.
That sculpture supposedly represents the resurrection, not the descent
*Pardon my mistake when I said, "ascension"
He's got a bunch of ? all over his face as he's being resurrected. Inspirational!
