A friend of mine is a teacher and has a bunch of migrants in her class since they got rid of ESL classes as "isolating." So she has to Google translate everything she says. And they write their essays in Spanish and Google translate them to English.
That's genuinely heartbreaking. Part of me can't help but think that women being the overwhelming majority of teachers cultivates this kind of self-destructive deference.
What is interesting to me is the woman came in 2005, and was naturalized in 2011. And yet she doesn't speak English in 2024?
