I think I know, but it's really weird to talk about. In the British mind admitting there are problems or talking about difficulties is worse than just letting it go. So a war happens and the husband lost a part of his face? The family would just make it seem like he has long hair and not talk about what's beyond the veil. Bombs are dropping around your city, but you pretend like it's not happening and continue to eat dinner. That idea was promoted to upper and middle class all the time.

It's way worse in Japan, but I often wonder if they got it from the British when trying to modernize.

So the country is falling apart, but facing it is considered more difficult. The pice are keeping the peace, and that peace means not letting it be the thing they fight.
