The left pretends that it's too "civilized" for punishment, so they come up with a bunch of euphemisms. "Accountability" is just the latest one, but "rehabilitation" and "re-education" are classics. Murray Rothbard had a good argument about how "rehabilitation" is actually the most horrific form of criminal justice, because the criminal isn't even recognized as a criminal, so the torment can go on indefinitely "for their own good."

And that's not just a theoretical argument either. Outright torture has historically been part of psychiatry since the beginning, but it's not torture because they don't call it torture.
