Morbius, and all the other huge failure capeshit movies, was still able to get the "it all ties together!" bucks. Not as many, but I know at least one guy who is still watching all of it because he has hope the big movies will be worth it.
This had literally nothing going for it. The director was on record saying the original was stand alone, every trailer made it sound less appealing, and word of mouth was bad before it even came out with only worse coming from there.
It seemed that WB was once again heavily banking on Harley being enough of a sell to make hundreds of millions of dollars, especially with a "famous starlet" playing her. Just like the last half dozen IPs they wasted on her.
For all the flaws of Morbius and The Marvels, they weren't intentionally written to destroy the lead character and piss off most of the audience. I think that was the big stake to the heart of this movie.
I'll give you Morbius, as Leto was trying his hardest to become A Thing again, but Marvels was absolutely written to continue to stick it to comic book readers with the forceful shoving of Brie Larson in our face and the absolute nonsense that is Kamala across all mediums.
The Marvels just had the benefit of being the 1203rd stab in that regard, instead of the 1st, so people didn't even care enough to be upset about it.
To clarify, I didn't mean long-time loyal fans of Pre-2008 Marvel. The MCU has barely given a fuck about what they wanted since these movies started. I meant casual fans of the MCU and people who actually liked the Captain Marvel movie (however many that is).
Now a Folie a Deux-tone Captain Marvel sequel would be like "She's a completely useless bitch, she fails at everything, she completely rejects her superhero role, then gets raped and dies". While I can imagine that would be wildly popular with a few people, it's similarly ill-advised.
Considering the poor reception Brie had from the moment she was announced, continuing to use her without any change was offensive to even those MCU fans.
Double so because both of her movies also exist to emasculate and demean Nick Fury, who is closer to her bumbling black sidekick instead of a hardass super spy a lot of the times.
I get your point, I'm just not giving them that credit.
the only time she moved the needle was the first suicide squad and they had a young hot margot robbie and slapped some hot pants on her. anytime they try to make her into something more than just slutty eye candy she fails

Harley's been a lead in pretty much all the failures. lol
