Another interview
The people who should be making games don't need lessons on what makes a game good or how to design a game.
They should already have those skills and knowledge. What they need is the other things.
How to program a game. This is technical knowledge that doesn't necessarily come from liking, understanding, or appreciating what makes a good game.
How to market, sell, and distribute the game. Business knowledge that isn't even related to the creation of games.
People with these technical and business skills can create a game and bring it to market without the game design and development skills necessary to make the game good.
And that's why we have crappy games.
I know the "best of" lists are effectively AI or NPC-driven given modern day journalism, but Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is criminally underrated.
Didn't make either JRPG list (Saturn, PS1).
It's an all time favorite. An entire genre is based on it. I do notice the same games get mentioned a lot in lists.
