The one I remember them talking about needing it for was insurance purposes and taxes. For insurance it technically should benefit because the alternative is just racking up massive medical debts and others that they can never pay that just get passed onto the rest of us, much like illegals and blacks do now.

Which, much like back then as well, just raises the bigger question of why all that is tied to an institution based on religion and "love." Its the government using shortcuts and then demanding we accept bandaids for the problem they caused.
