One way it ALWAYS lies is :
cautious journalism is inconsistent.
When political advantage is pro-Trump, we get slow, awkwardly literal coverage like yesterday. The emotive conjugation we've become accustomed to disappears, leaving the canvas blank for the politically expedient frame we'll see emerge in the next day or two.
The fact that there weren't many journalists at the event is itself political. But even if the newsgathering conditions had been the same & the attempt was on Biden, it's fair to assume the reporting would have been swift & decisive.
The rule of thumb appears to be this: when the political advantage is pro-Biden, legacy media frame & claim the W within minutes of verifying facts. When it's uncertain or disadvantageous, we see responsible journalism reminiscent of another era.
