I love the original. One of my favorite games ever. Is there any reason whatsoever to play the remake over it? If it just has a new layer of paint that doesn't do it for me. And the shitty localization would guarantee if I bought anything at all it would be the Japanese version.
No. There are a pair of lackluster new bosses, and now everything looks like paper (and is shiny for some reason.) those are the only selling points.
There's new music (which can be turned off) that isn't as good as the original sound track. Additional fast travel points are convenient but make an already fairly easy game even easier. Those are mixed bags that some people might enjoy.
Downsides: Localization nonsense, game runs at 30fps instead of 60 like the original, text can't be skipped or rewound, infinite continues in the pit to remove any challenge, partners recover with one HP after battle to remove even more challenge (and make danger strats even more busted.) And all the battle status/text stuff (Win, Level up, Bingo, etc.) goes way slower than it did on the GameCube version.
General consensus that you can just load an HD texture pack in dolphin and have a better experience.
Holy shit what??? How do they make a remake of a classic like that and fuck it up so badly? FPS cut in half from a game made 20 years ago? Infinite continues in the pit of 100 trials? That was like my final time spent in that game gathering a bunch of jelly ultras to attempt and beat that. Absolutely unbelievable. Localization bullshit, while annoying, isn't even as egregious as those other things you mentioned.
Competency crisis
Its a remake whose entire purpose is "old game now available on modern hardware" like most of the First Party Nintendo ones have been for a few years. Its only point is for people who hate emulation but don't have a physical hardware to play it on.
Its why Nintendo goes so hard on emulation, because they do this almost every generation through either Eshops or low cost Remakes. They are almost never worth buying unless you've never played the original.
At that point they should just literally update the graphics and call it a day though. Almost every actual tweak to the game itself that I've heard so far has ranged from bad to terrible. It's not the same game on new hardware at that point, it's an inferior version with a fresh layer of paint.
I'll never forget bringing my memory card to my buddy's house to play through the pit of 100 trials. For child me it was a big challenge and I was satisfied when I was able to beat it. And now you can just continue endlessly even if you die? So retarded. Apologize if it seems I'm sperging out over a miniscule change but yeesh....
The thing is, that's what they've done everytime prior. Sometimes not even updating the graphics, like with the 3in1 Mario collection.
I think the issue here is that people suspected the Vivian thing wouldn't fly in Current Year, so they started combing through the script and then discovered all of the various changes. As far as I know Nintendo wasn't really talking about those changes at all and probably didn't do much on the Japanese end in that regard.
So its a case of them expecting it to just fly right through and milk some free money, like SMRPG did, and then a localizer was left unsupervised to run through the script. Meaning a former slam dunk "remake" is now being questioned and compared, with a massive gaping negative on the front that the cheap positives can't scratch.
Also, personal opinion, I'm pretty positive on features like "retry" as long as they don't heal you and you just get another crack exactly as you were. Its more of a time save feature more than a difficulty lower a lot of times, because the alternative is just "now redo all those sections to get back to the part you died and retry anyway."
But that's just my personal opinion and I don't think yours is wrong either.
