You think far too highly of CNN. For it to be shocking you would need an implicit expectation that they had some internal framework that would make them reluctant to say faggotry. They have no such standards. If everything is about power and narrative control, however... well if you can make people say "f word" like they do "n word" congrats, you're wielding some real narrative control equating those two.
