I figured it would be fun chatting about this, Nvidia is usually the very standard go to these days and I can see why, you slot it in it's all very straightforward and pretty much guaranteed to work for the most part. Back in the day I would be going with AMD graphics cards because that's the budget option but I am one of those people who failed the hardware lottery multiple times when it came to AMD and I've had nothing but trouble with them.
Would you recommend AMD cards in 2024? Their software has certainly gotten much better and it's not weird login required crap like GeForce Experience. I've been pondering if I ever get some kind of rendering setup which hardware would be a good idea to go with.
My first card was a rx 480. It was cheap as shit and played anything I wanted reasonably well enough for my liking. I got a 3060 a few years later and I really don’t remember much difference, it was perfectly adequate for what I wanted at the time.
I have a 4070 now and I might upgrade again later but I can’t really justify it, I barely notice the improved frames or textures at a certain point, and I think a lot of the “high end” graphical features we’re being sold on look like shit.
Clarity, color, and smooth frames are all I really give a shit about. and with how poorly games are being optimized these days it’s not something I can always get just by having better hardware.
It's very much an issue of diminishing returns these days when it comes to gaming at least and you're absolutely right about the state of gaming these days. Most of the time it is pointless to upgrade if you're just a 'gamer' and are fine with 1080p 60hz/144hz and it's down to the developers' choice of game engine and them stubbornly sticking with buggy ancient internal software generally as well as their insistence on vomiting an unnecessary amount of polygons everywhere. Worse part about modern day developers though is the way they gaslight gamers and trying to pretend they need more powerful PCs to play their bloated crap.
