How are labor laws in Sweden where they are based if I remember right? There may be legal reasons you can't simply fire someone straight away and you need to demote them till they have no power and you pay them less.
It could be another version of Japan work environment where they don't really fire people, just make your work life unbearable till YOU leave.

iirc from an old customer of mine, you could fire them but you had to give them severence pay of several months
Plus i'm not even sure this mod lives in sweden so I'm not sure swedish labor laws apply
