The art style is pretty generic, so it definitely needs remarkable gameplay to be worth playing.

Actually reminds me a lot of P.N.03 on the GameCube, very similar vibe although even P.N.03 was more stylized, albeit in a similar way to Ikaruga. Shame that neither of these properties ever went anywhere.

PN03 was pretty neat but felt lacking. It was missing that distinctive quality you said. I certainly like the flair it had though.
