Assuming that that’s true, I’d guess it’s because the devs think it’s what people want, and as far as they know, it’s just some weird, harmless bullshit. It would be yet another example of Japanese devs not fully “getting” what’s going on in Western markets/culture—which isn’t a slight on Japanese devs or anything; that’s natural when there’s a cultural and language barrier like this one. I certainly don’t really “get” what’s going on in Japanese markets/culture.
You ask “why don’t they change it back,” but a more proper question, from the dev’s perspective, is “why not leave it as is?” It’s just like if Hyundai painted a bunch of their cars puke yellow before shipping to the US because something convinced them that color sells better here. As far as they know, it might be silly that we like that, but that’s all. It doesn’t mean anything to them, beyond being a little thing you do because it’s easy and it boosts sales.
If you want to say "I'm not buying anything that has type one/type two, even if it was a well-meaning mistake," that's a stance whose principle I understand and can support.
If you're saying "I'm not willing to assume it was non-malicious," I understand that too.
If you're saying "fuck these guys because despite the explanation, I'm unable to model other minds or account for information disparity," I have to call you an idiot.

Fuck that. They deserve nothing.

They will always take the mile, so why surrender the inch?
