The Statsi went about their job with typical German efficiency, I think 1 out of 3 East Germans were estimated to be an informant by the time the country collapsed.

And that is why their headquarters conveniently caught on fire and most of their records were destroyed, when the wall fell. And then everybody forgot everything about it.
