I think it basically came down to the fact that Eurovision is very popular here, and has been for decades, and therefore we put money towards it/its broadcast. So eventually they said “You know what, fuck it, you can be a feature act.” And then later gave us an actual spot in the comp.

But yeah, basically it comes down to money and popularity.

Tbf, Israel (and previously Lebanon) is most definitely not geographically part of Europe either, lol… And they’ve been in it for literally decades, so…
