Localization has never "been good". There's the acceptable translation like the Majikoi fan translation that keep alot of the original humor in, the Steins Gate translations that get all the various sci-fi references or Lobotomy Corp where the entire script was put through an SK to English MTL program and all of those are STILL more accurate that some localizer who hates the product inserting dated pop culture references and current day Id-Pol that will get removed in 20 years.
Why can't these people just translate a game 1:1? It's not that hard.
It used to be hard when physical media put limits on what you could write (before the advent of the N64 expansion pak for example). There's no excuse today when you have essentially limitless space on a computer. Today's Call of Duty Modern Warfare would take up the phyiscal space of a large refrigerator using 1990's level of technology.
God I remember playing through Lunar: The Silver Star, a game from 1987. That was complained to have had a bad translation at the time.
Chrono Trigger had the Frog character speak shakesperian. And Breath of Fire II's translation is infinity bad.
