WNBA is one of the bigger artificial organizations. Been propped up by the NBA since inception. Turns out not many people other than soys and lesbians want to watch a bunch of unattractive masculine women play basketball at relatively mediocre levels when you could spend the same time watching the NBA for a better experience.
Yeah I always wondered why they didn't just pick basketball players who are easy on the eyes. Women's Tennis was similar in who the sponsors used to gravitate around. I remember one of the Williams brothers getting big mad that despite winning a lot, the sponsors preferred the hot white European players lol.
Serena looks like a gorilla and has the personality to match. She lost to a half-black Japanese girl and she thought the appropriate response was to chimp out and destroy her racket.
Much, much more likely is because nobody actually cares about women's sports, including women

Replace the WNBA with Women's Volleyball and you'll be set for a ratings hit! (Until they start replacing them with trans dudes)

The pool of women who can play any sport well is very small, the pool of attractive women who can play a sport is even smaller.
Peak men’s sports are a spectacle. You see talented men that hone their craft and do things on the court that seems nigh impossible.
I have no doubt that I could lace up and beat 99.9% of the WNBA hands down
