What I’ve heard (not verified, but heard) is that they added it because “Americans like stupid things like that.” If that’s true, it’s not that they’re directly influenced by woke, but that they, like many Japanese companies, are being misled by what they see of American/Western cultural output.
There was an interview where somebody said something like "we knew Americans like making ugly characters for some reason" as their reasoning for Type 1/2 instead of male/female.
