But this is worse than Vietnam when officers were frequently hurt/killed in 'friendly fire'. Turns out conscripting people then giving them weapons expecting them to fight doesn't work out..
It probably didn't mentally register as him tossing hand grenades. It's just so abnormal that a person's mind might not even consider it in that environment.

And that is why typically, in conscript militaries, you don't give them live ammunition until they're at the front.
