Even if our OC band of plucky Zaku pilots all end up dead, I think that there is still the possibility of a really good story there, similar to a survival horror movie, with the Gundam as the slasher that the audience knows cannot or will not die, but we root for the characters anyway.

And yes, big anime hair is appropriate to an anime, but less so to a more "realistic" CG show. Look at me, hoping against hope that the obvious aposematism haircut is justified.

I know this is a two year old reply but I got to see the show and you are on the mark with the Gundam showing up as a slasher villain.
More fun trivia, it was a "recon in force" Gundam. It has minimum armor, would hunt beyond enemy lines and just attack mobile suits.
