I'm am old fucker, and in my life I've seen plenty of examples of lesbian women who seemed to have turned lesbian because they were very unnatractive.
I always had it clear in my mind that this was a thing with women, until one day an actress in my country who had always been a lesbian (and morbidly obese) "came out as straight" and got into a relationship with a young handsome actor.
She then proceed to openly tell people in interviews that her getting involved with women was a sort of coping strategy because she felt rejected by men (because she was a land whale).
Of course, the media proceeded to accuse her of internalized homophobia and bury the story (and keep in mind this was over 10 years ago).
So, this is nothing new in itself. The difference is that instead of going lesbian, they're turning trans, and to my great surprise, this behavior started infecting boys (the infamous incel to femboy pipeline).
Trauma, rejection, lack of parental affirmation, etc.
Most of the time with women it's related to some emotional setback, as you pointed out.
It's always funny seeing the 30+ yet -40 "lesbian 4 life" hitch herself to a handsome, tall, male, and start a family. And as you pointed out, the media exclusively ignores these stories because it ruins their narrative.
They are quick to pounce on the stories where a 40+ woman coming out of an extremely bad divorce decides to rebound by going lesbian (like Cassandra Peterson) because it helps push their narrative.
