Remember: If nothing changes, China WILL be number 1 before the end of the century.
I’m not convinced that’s set in stone. China doesn’t have diversity, but it does have its own demographic time bomb in the results of the one child policy. It is also building ghost town after ghost town to prop up its economy and real estate speculation with make-work projects, which doesn’t seem infinitely sustainable. I’m not saying China is doomed, but I think that as it stands, the US or China or both could hypothetically collapse by the end of the century, just from internal problems. I wouldn’t want to bet on which one, if either, will be the dominant world power in 2100.
