Preferably there's a middle ground and this sort of thing isn't necessary...but it's also not something that should be dismissed out of hand, either. To their credits, the Democrats have proved time and again that 'soft on crime' doesn't work. Fire on invaders a few times, and they probably stop coming, so you don't have to fire on them anymore. Harsh, but an actual solution. So immediately better than what either party in the US has done, perhaps.
I think with the one-step removed from an invasion we are seeing over the past year, that just firing on them a few times wouldn't work. There have been movies and stories for years about people firing on illegal immigrants in the southern borders of Texas and that hasn't stopped them at all.
I'd personally just like to close up the borders though so I'm kind of done with the middle ground approach I suppose.
I mean, if it's on a larger scale and with government support the message is a bit stronger. Random people taking shots and then facing legal action isn't the same as the country saying "we'll shoot you if you come here illegally."
Also, if you cut out benefits, in combination with higher threat to life, the invasion drastically slows, and becomes much more manageable.
That is fair enough, it isn't really a fair comparison at all, I'm pretty down with the government saying that though, at this point. Not that I have any faith in them or that we ever would in the US, but it sure seems appealing.
