Didn't something like 3/4 of the east coast American Indians get decimated by diseases like smallpox and TB after contact?
If these estimates are in anyway true, the lands would suddenly be "empty" because all the villagers had the Age of Sail coof.
95% is the number you are actually looking for. There were 3 (I think) waves of illness which swept through the population starting in the 1500's and continuing into the 1800's which each had huge mortality rates. The settlers where justified in their belief that the natives were dissapearing...because they were literally dissapearing. The Population of natives on the continent went from 200,000,000 (estimated) to pretty much none. Even now, hundreds of years later with time for the population to increase, there are only 5 million in the states, and that number includes all the mixes where the "native" is only 1/16 indian and the rest is Euro-mutt. You can do the math yourself.
