I might watch the full thing later, but for now I skipped around, and have a few thoughts to share:
A) I knew very little of the more modern stuff; sometimes not even artists, almost never songs. Plenty of those people I'd never heard a single song of.
B) It's amazing how even ten years ago was such a marked improvement, mostly. The (early) '10s still had their issues, but some of that shit is downright nostalgic compared to what's happening now.
C) Personal taste, feel free to roast me, but Imagine Dragons is alright, and I think they're one of those bands that deserve their fame for having a unique sound, even if it's not everyone's taste. I've always defended Fall Out Boy for the same reason; it was so cool to hate on them at a time, and they weren't really my thing, but the music was distinct, and I'd defend that.
D) Back to the early '10s stuff ('10-'14 and sporadically after that), it's amazing how again, compared to today's stuff, it had a more motivation and aspirational bent. You don't hear that much in popular music nowadays. Even the rap back then had more chance of being positive.
E) A short one: Fuck "Take Me to Church." Decent musically, terribly degenerate, smarmy, self-congratulatory virtue-signaling garbage. Really not a fan of that garbage.
F) People love to hate on Bieber. I don't feel the need to, I just don't engage with his stuff at all. That said...absolutely cracking up at him "rapping." Oof.
G) Last one: Ariana Grande. She made the list a few times. She's not a great artist. Is she just famous for dressing skimpy, singing about sex, and having a lot of sexy shots in her music? I looked up Side to Side, and she even got outdone musically by Nicki Minaj in her own song. Oof.
A decade ago the music industry started to shift from everybody chasing trends and sounding somewhat familiar by accident to everything being made to sound exactly the same to be able to be pushed out the door faster, make more money and promote further degeneracy. Nowadays everything pop is just terrible in every facet except for making catchy beats to hook people, while at least further back the songs sounded similar yet different enough that they felt natural and not manufactured. Most "artists" nowadays are just pretty faces and actors to play a part in pushing culture destroying music that assaults our ears every day.
