Maybe this is an ironic joke that I’m just not hip enough to understand, but Redfern is, and has been since the 70s, an absolute shithole.
Like, the closest Australia gets to a ghetto, pretty much… Abo central. Literally saw a drug deal in the middle of the street, between a teenage Abo and some old blokes, earlier…
It’s becoming “hipster” and “gentrified”, now, but it’s still an absolute dive…
The fact that Sydney has actual ethnic (Muslim, Indian, Leb, Portuguese) ghettoes even worse than this is… Impressive.
But anyway, the fact that they’ve opened a “Detroit style” pizza chain here is just… Too much self-aware hipster irony for me, tbh…
Opposite a barcade and a sea shanty bar. Because of course…
While the streets are full of filth, and the buildings literally fall down around it.
Straya. Love it…
Ghetto irony notwithstanding...
Detroit style pizza is a real thing, and it's fantastic. I'm biased being a MI native, but at first glace Detroit style may look like Chicago deep dish, but it's pretty different. The crust is thicker and airy, but the edges basically fry against the metal pan making a crust unlike any other style pizza. Cheese goes on first, then sauce, then other toppings.
https://www.buddyspizza.com/ claims to be the creator. Their pizza is pretty great. This is something that was invented long before Detroit became a shithole.
Geez now I'm standing up for Detroit? As somebody from another part of the state, this is like standing up for a junkie older brother.
Dave Portnoy, somewhat ironically given his word-salad tendencies, described Detroit style pizza perfectly: "it's an offensive lineman - looks heavy, plays light."
Love some good Detroit style pizza.
