It wasn't until after 1066 when William the Conquer took over did you have laws introduced in a western country that effectively disincentivised slavery so that's a millennium after we became AD.
And even then it applied only within that country and instead of slavery you have serfdom to replace it more. It would be more than half a millennium after that before you had a military power that was international enforcing anti slavery policy around the world and then you have the modern era powers fucking it up and reintroducing it (see Libya).
Ain't defending it, but if we're STILL fucking up in regards to slavery, we haven't got much room to stand on.
