I am not a woman but from talking to them, if they get really, really honest about their experience, the people telling them they have to doll up, or that they’re weird for wanting to do science or woodworking or other “male” pursuits is… drum roll… other women. Often, their mothers have a lot to do with it, since naturally mothers come from an earlier generation and what women are “supposed” to do and be is changing rapidly. But as Bill Burr points out in his famous WNBA routine, women like to tear each other apart and then blame men for the result.
