There's a famous movie in anthropology circles about transgenders selling themselves in the islands of Samoa. The movie says they are part of a tradition called Fafafine, and Samoans accept them.

Fafafine is when a woman has too many sons, and chooses one to help with the chores. It literally means Woman's Work.
