Did they really “garner outrage,” though? My reaction is “haha, that sounds gross, what a weird stunt.” It doesn’t really impact my opinion of Pepsi in any way, but it does make me think of them and might make me casually mention them in a “did you hear about this weird thing” context. Which sounds like good marketing to me.
I agree that there is such a thing as bad publicity, but I wouldn’t say this is it.
