Sure, the US secretary of transportation has thoughts on building bridges. But infrastructure occupies just a sliver of his voluminous mind.
Even if you like Buttigieg and think he is a smart, great guy… we’re talking about the United States. The theoretically richest, most powerful, most influential nation in the world. Its government should, in any rational ordering, have the prestige and reach to recruit any number of luminaries. With all that, why settle for a guy who’s very smart but doesn’t think a ton about infrastructure? Shouldn’t the infrastructure secretary be someone who’s very smart and lives and breaths infrastructure? Shouldn’t he be a genius with a passion, rather than a genius who’s paying half-hearted lip service?
