Remember, this is the exact scenario they fear the most. The actual dread of it is why the entire concept of "gatekeeping" has been such a big boogeyman for years now.

Exactly. Phonies hate being called out on their phoniness is why gatekeepers became the scourge of nerdiness.
And usually its even more blatant than this. Books aren't really a hobby for most people, and are very general. Even people who don't read should be able to name a few they heard about on TV or in school (proving how retarded this girl is).
But when it came to nerd shit, failing the most basic test wasn't just you being stupid. It was you accidentally revealing that you were outright lying because it was often just a baseline level of information.
