And now they're using it as a sort of mandatory "loyalty test", wherein if you don't do the grovel, or complain about it in any way, or aren't sufficiently obsequious, you can lose your job, or, as in the articles here, can be barred from graduating, or accessing your courses...
It's happened scarily quickly.
A "pledge of allegiance to the party", if you will, but it's rapidly moved from an occasional thing, at major events and at woke organisations, to everywhere, all the time, and compulsory...
