Well, the Progressives learned from Reconstruction. They learned that it's not enough to destroy the industry, agriculture, and military might of those who dare defy them. They needed to also destroy the minds and spirit.

Reconstruction was focused on looting the South of the remains of its wealth. Post-WWII Germany was focused on destroying the ability of the people of Germany to feel any sort of pride in their origins.
