I agree with all that but the politicians pushing this understand it will have pushback from everywhere.

That's the point, widespread outrage over peanuts while they do much worse things in the dark, and the media gets led to the new outrage with a leash to ensure they don't start looking into anything else.

It has been a successful strategy for the last few years.
