Slack doesn't do anything IRC doesn't already do, and you can run your own IRC server, thereby freeing yourself from all corporate censorship.
People are going to figure out eventually that all services that require relying on someone else running the actual servers that service runs on are too much of a risk to free speech.
Yea, in the early 2000s during the heyday of the blogosphere more tech savy bloggers were setting up open source wordpress sites for the less tech savy.
I might try and see if I can get matrix set up at home, I have a linux box with ubuntu server on it that I am using to tinker with owncloud.

Yeah, but normies aren't gonna use IRC, these are more self-hostable modern/familiar alternatives:
https://mattermost.com
https://zulip.com
https://matrix.org/ (less user friendly but arguably the future)
https://revolt.chat (Don't know much about this one)
But then again, nor are they gonna self-host anything. There's probably an untapped market of just setting these services up for people.
