Be careful. Current GW is top fucking woke. Even with Cavill's recent infamy for daring to care about source material faithfulness, I wouldn't be putting hopes in this.
Even current year books are good. Certain authors are woker than others. Dan Abnett, Sandy Mitchell, Guy Haley, Graham McNeil are all good. Never noticed much woke stuff in them.
I'd read gaunts ghosts and eisenhorn novels first. Good stuff and easy to get into. Keep 1d4chan or a 40k wiki open to understand certain things. Ciaphas Cain novels are good fun also.
Aaron Dembski-Bowden is one of the leading woke authors but he's been slapped down before. Even then, his woke streak is shoehorning women in. He's still got decent books and I enjoyed his Night Lord's trilogy.
Mike Brooks used they/them pronouns for a character in one of his books and it played havoc with me. Horrible for an audio book. Guessing he'll go further on the woke side.
Ultimately there's just so many authors and books it's hard to call out where they all sit.
Nice reference to the western. I will support 40k and I need to read the source material but I have a lot to dive into I hear

If I want to read the books what year should I stop at?

I have read books from all of those authors and Mike Brooks is by leaps and bounds the most woke of them
