That's what they said about Orange is the New Black. No way you could get people to watch a show about poor minority women in prison unless you make the main character a fish out of water wealthy white woman going to prison.
Sure you could. You'd just need to change up the plot of the show.
Portray the women as horrific thugs. Because face it, even if black, they have to be REALLY shitty to manage to get into prison for long-term incarceration if they're women. Statistics back that one up solidly. They've gotta be puppy-torturers-on-steroids.
So you get your MC who is hunting down the woman who tortured her son to death on film, purposefully gets arrested, purposefully ruins her court case to get sent to prison, and is seeking out her revenge, but the Big Bad Evil Bitch is the leader of a major prison gang, and so the fish-out-of-water story is this not-evil person trying to fit in and buy clout with other prison gangs and shore up her resources and power to take her perfect revenge.
Done, minority female protag with a story focusing on other black female prisoners. And it'd sell, if well-acted.

I can't remember all the characters, but the Laura Prepon girl isn't wealthy is she? I think she was a drug dealer -- nigger rich.
