I mentioned this in the other post in the gaming channel, but the "ripple" effect from this was that they cut out 90% of the prize money from their card game's esports scene and effectively made it so that if you don't get to worlds you make nothing. Not only that, but the "Q&A" they did alongside it was filled with so many non-answers that it has since become a meme in their community.
People harp on about how esports will replace actual sports and all of that nonsense. China just showed how easy it is to kill the scene by removing it from a single country.
