That case was the absolute platonic ideal of self defense, where every single part of the event was caught on video, divine forces intervened to ensure he missed shooting a black man who tried to kick him in the head from a foot away, and it still went to a drawn out trial where there was a genuine chance he would spend life in prison. You're also forgetting that multiple groups of armed communists were so unconcerned by the threat of police or military that they were freely burning down buildings in a city with a population under 100k and at least four unarmed men voluntarily charged at somebody carrying a rifle.
