When Benedict was still Pope, I agreed with the criticisms that he was too fundamentalist and that his dogma wasn't relevant anymore to the modern world. Since then, I feel like I've gained more perspective. I've seen Francis' comments, the changes to Western society that he endorses. I've seen Christianity lose even more influence in the face of the Atheistic movement than it did under Benedict's strict interpretation of Scripture. And I've seen what people start to worship once there is no longer a religion to stabilize them, once there is no longer anything to worship above the self and false idols. Even as an atheist myself, it's utterly obvious that society is not better off now than when we still relied on Judaeo-Christian morality to ground society, like we still did when I was a child.
I wish Benedict had never resigned. Had he remained as Pope, perhaps his voice would have helped to stem the tide of insane postmodernism that's dominated since. I hope the worst happens to Francis, so that we can be rid of that cancer as soon as possible.
Jesuits. Francis is the first Jesuit pope. Jesuits vow not to seek the papal office.
