Plucking a flower from its plant, will wither and die because it is no longer attached to the plant which cultivated and grew the flower.

This clothing choice only emulation doesnt in any way connect them to 50s culture/conservatism/values/whatever it is they are conflicted with desiring, It will also wither and die because it too is not attached to anything that cultivated or grew it.
