People are so thoroughly indoctrinated by mainstream media that they cannot even consider the vax as the cause. They've been told again and again and again and again that only far-right conspiracy theorists question the official narrative.
Plus, do they really want to start pulling that thread? That the government and the media lied to them? Most people would rather not do that and live in ignorant bliss, or well, ignorant mourning. Especially if it means admitting they themselves made the wrong choice.
Unfortunately I have plenty of these NPCs in my family. They cannot fathom the fact that the TV might not be telling the truth. It's just not something they can consider. It wouldn't be on TV if it wasn't true!
