We keep saying that. Let me be controversial and say that it's not that. The 'left' just looks for novelty, as Robert Conquest explains, that is the only connecting line between progressive ideas from the early 20th century to leftism today. Most specific ideas are abandoned, but they're always demanding 'change', messing with what works and trying to increase their own power.
The people are all saying: "No! This will never be OK! No matter the ammount of slow boil, no matter how far in the future, it will never be OK to do this to young children!" And I think this scares them.
