I may hate what you say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.
I guess that means nothing
This only works when everyone has this same principle. You defend their right to free speech, they would kill you to stop you from speaking your mind. They are our enemy.
Ironically we need to take a page out of their book and be intolerant of their intolerance. Some people (communists, pedophiles, globalists, etc) shouldn't have rights if they use them to undermine our country.
I don’t want it to have to come to that but I see the logic in what you are saying
I hope not. It's the opposite of that. Logic is rational, theoretical. What's he's saying is practical. You're talking Principles, and he's talking about what happens to Principled folk, when those folk are specifically targeted and undermined using their Principles as a weakness.
That's what this whole Age is about. It's about starting with an unprecedented clean slate and coming up with too good a plan for a fair, decent, and consistent Governance. And then 2 centuries of petty assholes and power-seekers saying "Oh, yeah!?" and probing for weaknesses at every turn, for generations.
Principles are great, logic is great. But they've got to bend to sheer practicality if antagonists specifically target Principles and Logic as weak points. There has to be some aegis.
Oh I agree with what he said. I guess I wish we lived in a world where that quote was followed
