I think the judge was being lenient with Brooks to ensure he has no grounds for appeal.
She gave him tons of rope, again and again, and every time, he hanged himself (not literally, unfortunately).
He'll probably try appealing on the grounds that the judge was biased against him, but the appeal court is going to look at the record and say "LOL NO."
His only legal hope is to argue "The judge didn't prevent me from making a complete ass of myself, which prejudiced the jury," or "my attorney was hopelessly incompetent."
