Same thing with any predator. Anything that actually fights back isn't worth the risk even when you're guaranteed to win.

In this case, if they continue the fight he's going to keep wailing on them until they actually seriously hurt him or murder him and then the police might actually do something about it. Might. But it's not worth the risk.
